【 Structure 】
・ Lecture on Indonesian foot culture
(how to use feet in local daily life, introduction to traditional performance such as court dance and silat.)
・ Workshops to relax the soles of feet
(Massage, introduction to some walking techniques, going out in the garden to build up the soles of the feet, etc.)
・Viewing a performance

During the viewing time, a tarai tub filled with water, mud, slime, and other materials (a foot-pleasing device) was prepared. Each guest was asked to choose a material and watch the performance while stepping on it with hadashi.
The performance was a contemporary dance reconstructed by taking some steps and ideas from Indonesian local arts introduced in the lecture at the beginning of the event. The audience spent time feeling the soles of their feet both visually and tactilely.

The second concept was to [“Blur the Lines”].
In Indonesia, the concept of inside and outside is blurred, and the houses are very well ventilated. There are ants and such inside the houses, and people even walk barefoot to the eaves. This relaxed atmosphere is reflected in the relationships between people, and although the community is very strong, it is not exclusive. It is natural that everyone is different, so I felt very comfortable with the sense of being able to coexist without being forced to draw a line between what is good and bad.
I wanted to create a relaxed space that is not bound by “lines” in this performance. I personally found it very interesting how the boundary between inside and outside gradually became blurred as the soles of the visitors’ feet got dirty in the area that was initially a no-foot area.
